The 2.5-liter turbocharged boxer engine is an upgraded engine to an impressive degree, with the introduction of a technology that was only available on some BMWs and Ferraris. Called Subaru Intelligent Drive (SI-Drive), it allows a driver to twist a knob to select one of three engine performance levels: Intelligent (economy), Sport (sport) and Sport Sharp (high performance).
The Outback Limited XT wagon uses the turbocharged engine with SI-Drive, but there’s still the bread-and-butter Legacy 2.5i wagon that remains one of the best values in versatile transportation.
The turbocharged 2.5-liter four-cylinder engine makes 243 horsepower and 241 pound-feet of torque at 3600 rpm.
Limited wagon has a long list of standard features that might be considered luxury, including a premium 120-watt sound system with MP3 capability that’s pre-wired for XM Satellite Radio and has an auxiliary audio jack, four-stage heated front seats with power and lumbar adjustment, air filtration system, dual-zone climate control, power glass moonroof, folding heated sideview mirrors, four-beam halogen headlights, halogen fog lights, and new 17-inch alloy wheels.
Safety is enhanced with dual-stage frontal airbags, front seat-mounted side-impact airbags and full coverage side curtain airbags. Active front-seat head restraints are standard. Anti-lock brakes with electronic brake-force distribution come standard. Add those safety features with the stability of Subaru’s all-wheel drive, and the Outback is at the top of our list for when the weather turns nasty and roads turn slippery.
Though mechanically similar, the Outback offers slightly more ground clearance than the Subaru Legacy and has underbody protection that makes it better suited to gravel roads and deep snow. These cars are truly well suited to the sort of outback you find in America. Whether on paved or unpaved roads, the Outback’s handling is vastly superior to that of a sport utility, yet it can stand up to a fair amount of abuse. Outback wagons are an excellent choice for outdoor activities.
The Subaru Outback is roomy and comfortable and can go almost anywhere. It offers premium technology, lots of safety feature, and excellent handling and all-weather capability. It’s a great companion for the outback.
